Key Phonics Terms



Phoneme:
one unit of sound in a syllable or word

Grapheme: one or more letters that represents one sound

Morpheme: the smallest part of a word that has meaning or influences the meaning of a word

Sample Rule: ge vs. dge



When you hear the /j/ sound at the end of a word or syllable and it is preceded by a short vowel, it is spelled -dge

👉 Examples: dodge, wedge, ridge

If there’s a consonant, long vowel, or vowel team before the /j/ sound, it is spelled -ge

👉 Examples: siege, huge, wage
